"The Oldest Profession" at the Ghent Playhouse Author: John Wallace Oct-10-2006 07:32
The Ghent Playhouse opened its 2006-2007 Season with "The Oldest Profession." Written by Paula Vogel, the plot centers around five aging practitioners of the oldest profession who are fighting to stay in "the life" as the Reagan years begin. Though all of the women are vibrant and somewhat sexy, they are still faced with a diminishing clientele, most of whom are dying off. This bettersweet comedy with some songs tells how the five women struggle to find and learn new tricks with wit, compassion and humor.
Cathy Lee Visscher, the Director, who is an experienced actress, director and producer, does a great job of creating the proper atmosphere for the show. Paul Leyden, the musical director, also plays the piano as an accompanist to the women singing, and he appreared to really enjoy it. Joanne Maurer did an outstanding job, as usual, in creating the costumes for the show. Bill Visscher, the set designer, who also built the set, did a great job.
The cast featuring Wendy Power Spielmann, Ellen Lieberman, Marie Allocca, Stephanie Sloan and Sally Dodge, gave outstanding performances and were very convincing in their roles. This is a great show to kick off the season and get some laughs. I highly recommed that you see it. |
